Queens From History
Christina of Sweden
Queen of Sweden
Lived 1626 to 1689
The Choice to Begin Again
Christina became queen as a child, refused to marry and abdicated in 1654. After converting to Catholicism, she made a new life in Rome, where her patronage brought artists, writers and thinkers together. Her celebrated collections also included art taken during Sweden’s wars. She leaves us with a complicated example of reinvention: choosing a different life can be courageous, while the privileges that make those choices possible still deserve examination.
