Queens From History
Elizabeth I
Queen of England and Ireland
Lived 1533 to 1603
Judgment Under Public Scrutiny
Elizabeth I inherited a divided kingdom in 1558 and ruled for 45 years. Fluent in five languages, she selected capable advisers and used speeches and royal visits to shape her public authority. Her reign also brought harsh laws against Catholics and the beginnings of English colonial expansion. Her story invites us to think carefully about leadership: how we communicate, whose counsel we seek and who bears the consequences of our decisions.
