Queens From History
Emma of Hawaiʻi
Queen consort of the Hawaiian Kingdom
Lived 1836 to 1885
Care That Became an Institution
Emma turned concern for her people into an institution. As queen consort, she founded The Queen’s Hospital with King Kamehameha IV in 1859, personally gathering financial support as introduced diseases devastated Hawaiʻi. She later left land to sustain its work. After losing both her son and husband, she continued public service, including fundraising abroad for St. Andrew’s Cathedral. Her legacy invites us to consider what compassion can build when it is matched with sustained, practical effort.
