The Courage to Resist
When the British East India Company refused to recognize her adopted son’s claim to Jhansi, Lakshmibai faced the loss of her family’s kingdom. She became a military leader during the uprising of 1857 and defended Jhansi against British forces. After the city fell, she continued the struggle and died fighting near Gwalior in 1858. Her brief life left an enduring place in India’s memory of resistance, with a woman at the center of the story.
