Queens From History
Supayalat
Queen consort of Burma, now Myanmar
Lived 1859 to 1925
Power, Exile and Perspective
Supayalat was a powerful queen consort at the court of Burma’s last king, Thibaw. British conquest sent the royal family into exile in India in 1885. Her story includes both the loss of her homeland and a court where struggles for power could end in execution. Meeting her on the page asks us to hold complexity: acknowledge colonial injustice, examine how authority was used and resist turning a woman into either a caricature or a saint.
